You're right about facebook co-opting all the key features....those facebook people are smart.

I definitely don't think Twitter is going away, but I think it's still trying to find it's main usefulness. But maybe that's what's cool about Twitter is that you can use it for so many different things. The thing I love about twitter is the ability to give me info and for me to post info. With a killer 3rd party app like Tweetie or Tweetdeck it so stinking easy to attach a link or picture, and it's so easy to search for things and engage others in conversation. And hashtags at conferences or about certain topics are not going away.

The bigger question in my mind is how much effort should our staff give to leveraging these tools for the Kingdom of God?

I wonder if students will begin to adopt it after college as it does seem like the heavy users are twenties and thirties. Part of it is that facebook seems to co-opt so many of twitter's key features (mentions, public updates, following celebrities/organizations). As facebook opens up, it will be interesting to see if twitter is still necessary.

However, the news ability is still unique to twitter and, like you said, may be it's killer app. Anecdote: My parents had been down to Hoover Dam a month ago and had pictures of the new bridge going over the gorge down there. I wanted to see recent pictures and google wasn't turning up much for me. Hello, twitter. Lots of pictures that were taken within the last week, a few within the last 24 hours. It's the tweets plus the pics. Facebook couldn't have done that as far as I'm aware. Maybe flickr, etc., but really easy to find on twitter.
