Everyone wants to be a hero
You can’t do it all and you can’t be who your not. It’ll suck the life out of you trying to be a super-hero minister.
A number of years ago, I spend some time dealing with issues of comparison in my own life and also my innate desire to be like these “icon”
staff members of Campus Crusade. I was doing fairly well in ministry, seeing some fruit and seeing God move in significant ways, but the reality was that I was trying to live up to some sort of super-hero ministry guy. I had a picture of what I wanted to be like, mostly from books or other stall-wort leaders I had observed. The result of longing for this in my life was:
- Frustration when I didn’t get opportunities to lead in ways I considering highly significant.
- Not taking the time to honor God with my own unique skills and desires.
- In my mind I never quite measured up to those around me.
- I was often second-guess myself because I couldn’t do exactly what others did.
Notes:
- God still wants us to dream big and audaciously and be full of faith.
- Get to know yourself. The Strengthfinders test was helpful for myself as well as our team.
- We still ought to learn and develop in a well rounded way that honors God. There is room to try new things!
