Is a smartphone necessary?

With the release of the iPhone 4 today comes another round of “what’s next?” with smartphones. Basically they function as little mobile computers now and are becoming more and more integrated in how we function day to day.

So this got me thinking. My laptop is an integral part of my job. Without it I cannot complete work that is necessary. In fact it’s basically required to own one on staff with Campus Crusade. So when is my smartphone going to move into the same category? Maybe a better question is when should we move it into the same category?

had i stayed at chico state another year as director of the ministry i would have REQUIRED all staff and interns to have either an iphone or droid (although almost 70% already have one or the other).

–in five years nearly everyone will have what we know as a smartphone now.

–it’s good stewardship–so many emails and communications can get done in times when you cannot break out your laptop (for staff it’s walking to and from appointments).

–poor email management is rampant in ccc–when i bought my first smartphone (a huge sprint blackberry that looked like a remote control) my inbox count instantly decreased significantly.
