Ooh - that's really good. And it brings up an interesting comparison - living off-campus is kinda like living in the "suburbs" of your campus! Though (like you said above) suburban living can indeed be God's call, it's helpful to remember that it makes living it out harder in some ways.

Very nice. I wish I had a student to tell that to. Maybe I'll just go find a stranger.

I agree Benson. The principles really are true on our campuses. Now think about what that means in light of living on campus vs. off campus. This could be an easy way to challenge students to remain in the dorms and live out a ministry during their upperclassmen years.

The fun thing for me, whenever I hear these kinds of notes on why city-reaching is a powerful strategy, is that the same truths apply to campuses (regardless of whether they're "city campuses" or not). A lot of the argumentation - even your list above - applies perfectly if we replace "city" with "campus." Different degrees, different peoples... but it's neat knowing that we've already gotten to serve in a similarly powerfully influential arena.

I'm not sure of the answer to your question Erin, but I'm gonna find out :) I think the best thing we can do is have an attitude of humility and be learners.

What do you think the best way to adapt is?

The cool thing about Tim Keller's thoughts about "interfacing" with the city is that the principles can be lived out anywhere...even in the suburbs or small town. It's just that the city makes it a whole lot easier.

I loved Jay Lorenzons practical thoughts on this. http://mycommonplace.com/?p=284

I spoke used that specific talk from TK a while back to speak on Jonah at Cru. So good!

Yes, I think people are more similar than different. Even though the culture is different wherever you go, people are still longing for authenticity, love, grace, purpose, etc.

Matt, so glad you're preparing your heart for ministry in the city by preparing the mind through understanding the theology of urban ministry. I completely agree with Tim Keller's thoughts on this. It reminds me of what he said at CSU. (I only wish that these thoughts would have caught on within CCC circles about 10 years ago.) An additional thought: some people move to the "city" but actually live on the outskirts, in the suburbs or further. They never even experience what the city has to offer, let alone interact with the people. But sometimes living in the city means sacrificing some things like a yard or quiet, but it's worth it in order to actually interface with the people of the city.

I just listened to Tim Keller's "Love for the City" on a walk yesterday afternoon. I'm so affirmed and challenged by God through TK every time I listen. This was my second or third talk I've listened to about the city. The first time, I have to say I was less open than I am now. What stuck with me, though, from that first talk was: "God loves the city more than He loves the countryside because God loves people more than trees." In the past four months, God has been working in my heart in dramatic ways - just ask my husband.

Erin: I think the people in the city are just people. They just need community and love and grace and truth like we all do. I'm sure there are some things that could help you adapt and be especially relevant, but I think at heart they're not that different from a little Korean girl from Omak, Washington.

Hearing talks and feedback is inspiring a desire to pack up and head to the city. I'm convinced pursuing God's kingdom in urban locations is a worthwhile investment. But right there, that's when I stop and realize, I'm still Cowtown me. If I just head straight to the city, I bring with me my attitudes, prejudices...I'll still interact and communicate with others like a country girl.

I guess I'm wondering... how do I adapt to a dramatically different culture? How can I decode and assess the city environment, in order to establish common ground with the people there, and effectively serve their needs while communicating the gospel? Does Tim Keller talk about that? How can I prepare my heart to be challenged in ways I've never experienced before?
