What can I do with 5 loaves and 2 fish?

Not a lot without Jesus.pic-008

Recently at the annual Greater Northwest Missional Team Leaders Conference I heard a couple of devotionals on the story of Jesus feeding the five thousand from Matthew 14.

One thought caught my interest and struck me profoundly. It was this…

Jesus didn’t break the bread and then magically make a bunch of dump-trucks filled to the brim with bread appear. Rather, he took the bread, gave thanks, broke it and handed it to the disciples. And as they went to hand out the bread to the multitudes….a miracle happened. The bread and fish begin multiply. Something happened as they were obedient to God.

God invites us into the story and allows us to be used by him. Often I think I need to wait for God to completely move before I’m obedient, when in reality He’s waiting for me to take the bread and see a miracle happen. He doesn’t ask me to do it all at once, but he does ask me to take the next step.
