What’s your hedgehog?

A few years ago, we were a college ministry who did it all. So much so, that we weren’t accomplishing a lot of anything. hedgehog_01

We had leadership meetings galore, ministry socials every weekend, superbowl parties, all kinds of committee meetings. As a staff person I almost always had 4 nights a week full of some kind of ministry activity. Not all of these were bad things, but the reality was that the ministry had gotten so complicated that we had trouble having the capacity to do what we felt called to…win students to Christ, build them in their faith, and send them out to impact the world for Christ.

This began a lively discussion on the hedgehog principle, coined by Jim Collins who wrote the book “Good to Great.”. The hedgehog principle answers the questions…what you can be the best in the world at, what you are deeply passionate about, and what best drives your economic or resource engine?

The last 3 years have been a journey of simplifying and lining up our ministry events, structure, communication with our hedgehog. It has changed our ministry for the better.

I’m curious…if you are on staff with Campus Crusade what do you think your local movements hedgehog is? How do you figure it out?
